Case Study: Llanberis Community Orchard

The idea for a community orchard in Llanberis had been developing in a few people’s minds and came to fruition during a Youth Hostel Association (YHA) open day in September 2014. The YHA Snowdon Llanberis manager, Janet Walker, suggested that an outdoor space at the Youth Hostel would make an excellent site. The space is an existing orchard with several old apple and damson trees, which had received no attention for many years.

Case Study: Rhostyllen Allotment Project

On a strip of land between a disused railway line and residential housing in the community of Esclusham (on the outskirts of Wrexham), are 12 allotment plots, used by members of the community to grow food and socialise in a small communal area planted with wild flowers.
Called the Rhostyllen Allotments Project, it is an excellent example of how a local community council can support the development of a growing project – transforming an overgrown piece of land used for dumping rubbish into something valued and useful.

Case Study: S106 Agreements

One Brighton is an eco-development of 172 residential flats, plus office space, in Brighton. As part of a S106 Agreement, 28 small raised bed allotments have been created on a balcony on the sixth floor. The development is run by a Community Interest Company.

Terre de Liens is a French civil society organisation created in 2003 to address the difficulties faced by organic and peasant farmers in securing agricultural land. Land prices are high and land market so competitive that access to land has become a major bottleneck for farmers seeking new farms or additional land to maintain their current activities.

Case Studies

The Community Land Advisory Service will be building up a portfolio of case studies over time, which will features various aspects of land-based issues. 

The case studies will also investigate how particular problems and challenges have been and how they have been dealt with by landowners and community growing projects.
